Regular maintenance ‘can cut car servicing costs’
- 4th February 2010
Motorists can carry out a range of basic maintenance checks that will help them keep their car servicing costs low, according to an expert.
Thom Conroy, of Associated Content, has claimed in a column for the website that while not everyone has “incredible mechanical skills”, many can save “big money” by taking care of several aspects of their servicing.
He claimed that one of the easiest aspects of maintenance that drivers can carry out themselves is checking tyres are at the correct pressure.
Oil changes were also highlighted as an important area of servicing that drivers can be responsible for.
“Buying motor oil by the case as well as oil filters can save as much as 50 per cent over the price a mechanic will mark-up the items, not to mention the labour and tax involved,” he explained.
“The same goes for flushing the radiator and refilling it with anti-freeze.”
Lancashire County Council’s road safety advisor James Powell recently claimed that, as MOTs only come around once a year, drivers should always ensure vehicles are in a good condition.
