Regular car servicing ‘boosts fuel efficiency’
- 20th April 2010
Drivers can improve the fuel efficiency of their vehicles by having them regularly serviced, it has been suggested.
Writing for the Times Herald-Record, Christian Livermore outlined how research has highlighted the potential benefits of keeping on top of maintenance issues including tyre pressure.
He highlighted that a study by the Car Care Council revealed proper inflation of tyres can boost fuel efficiency by three per cent, while the replacement of dirty air filters could improve mileage by up to 14 per cent.
Oil should be changed every 3,000 miles, he explained, while other items also need to be replaced.
“You should also change your fuel filter at least once a year, change your air filter so the engine can ‘breathe properly’, and change your spark plugs,” he added.
According to recent figures from Vauxhall, 27 per cent of drivers in the UK attempt to avoid car maintenance checks for as long as possible.
