Protyre: Icy conditions can cause tyre damage
- 24th December 2009
Drivers are being warned that the current icy road conditions could cause an upsurge in ‘kerbing’ as drivers slide towards the edge of the road.
According to Protyre, kerbing can occur even when travelling at low speeds and can cause damage to the car such as tyre and wheel misalignment, and uneven wear, potentially leading to premature tyre replacement.
The firm added that hitting the kerb could also cause the tyre sidewall to pinch against the kerb and the wheel, causing air to leach from the tyre.
Motorists are also advised keep an eye out for debris near the kerb which could damage the car wheel if driven over.
It is important that vehicles have regular services to ensure their tyres are in road-safe condition.
Earlier this month, research by Mytyres.co.uk highlighted that over 50 per cent of drivers questioned are concerned about skidding out of control on the UK’s roads this winter.
