Police target drivers without MOT certificates
- 25th March 2010
Police in Surrey have attempted to raise awareness about the importance of MOT certificates as part of a major operation.
Through its one-day Driver Watch operation, a joint venture with Epsom & Ewell Borough Council and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, the police stopped cars and dealt with a range of offences.
Over 46 vehicles were found to be breaking the law, with some of the motorists stopped failing to have either valid MOT certificates or relevant tax documentation.
Neighbour sergeant Gary Pickett said operations like Driver Watch tend to be “extremely productive”.
He added: “Not only does it help us to catch people who are driving illegally but it also gives us a chance to educate drivers.”
Recent figures from Vauxhall revealed that 27 per cent of drivers try to avoid dealing with car maintenance issues for as long as possible, with many citing cost as a key reason why.
