New DfT guidance to reduce risk of potholes
- 6th April 2010
New guidance for anyone carrying out road works is being issued in a bid to reduce the risk of potholes forming.
Potholes caused by poorly replaced road surfaces are a significant inconvenience to motorists and can lead to unnecessary servicing costs by causing damage to people’s cars.
The new guidance, which was published by transport minister Sadiq Khan, highlights new methods to provide better quality road surfaces, which would reduce the chances of potholes developing, and also cut down the risk that the road would have to be replaced again.
Mr Khan said: “The new Code of Practice I am publishing today will ensure that when utilities dig up the road they replace it properly – reducing disruption as well as the probability of potholes developing.”
Last month, Kia Motors urged drivers to watch out for potholes after a study highlighted that dealers in the worst affected areas have reported a 150 per cent increase in pothole-related repairs in recent months.
