Motorists warned to not forget about tyres
- 25th August 2009
A motoring expert has called on drivers to not forget about the importance of ensuring their tyres are in good condition.
Chris Mullins of Gloucester-based firm Chris Mullins Tyres made the comments after research by the company found that 77 per cent of wheels they checked between May and July were worn below the legal limit of 1.6 mm.
Talking to ThisisGloucestershire.co.uk, he explained that many people only realise the importance of having quality tyres after car servicing.
He told the newspaper: “Tyres are often a distress purchase when the car fails the MOT and not enough motorists realise that it is an offence to drive on tyres with less than 1.6mm of tread.
“It’s a false economy to ignore tyres as drivers run the risk of prosecution, fines and penalty points.”
Recent research by Saga found that 25 per cent of drivers under 50 fail to check either their oil or tyres before taking a trip abroad in their car.
