CEO helps raise £300K in Charity Rally in India
- 9th January 2009
In October 2008 IN'n’OUT CEO Lee Stonehouse took part in a rally event in
India to raise money for charity. Lee and his driving partner, Paul Denham,
drove a 1950s style Hindustan ‘Ambassador’ across southern India on the
Karma Enduro challenge.
Tackling tough terrain such as the Western Ghat mountain range the pair
covered a distance of over 2000km. This was no mean feat given that rally
organisers accurately described the car as handling like a ‘drunken badger’
- with just 37bhp.
The route took Lee over demanding and varied terrain through Goa, Kerala,
Karnataka and Tamil Nadu as well as crossing through India’s tiger reserves.
The challenge smashed its fund raising target of £150K and by Christmas the
rally had raised over £300K, with the eventual total expected to rise
further still.
Two charities benefit equally from the funds raised: Adventure Ashram, a
young charity that promotes better health and education for the very poorest
people in the Palani Hill region of Southern India and the UK’s Rainbow
Trust, which offers practical and emotional help to terminally ill children
and their families.
Of the experience Lee said, "Going to India for the first time I had little
in the way of preconception. Now having been there and having met hundreds
of villagers throughout the rally, I feel that with help of all our kind
sponsor's support, we have done a marvelous thing for these lovely people."
