Car servicing `can prevent summer driving problems'
- 16th July 2009
Motorists should ensure they carry out car servicing checks before heading off on summer journeys if their car has not been used a great deal over the winter, it has been recommended.
According to the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF), hot weather can put extra strain on the engine and cooling system, while long road trips with heavy loads in warm temperatures can place stress on tyres.
The organisation went on to say that worn tyres can add considerably to braking distances, especially after summer showers.
RMIF director Sue Robinson commented: "After months of winter driving, when trips in the car are often short, long summer journeys can be hard for a car. If a vehicle has not been properly looked after, problems could arise."
Earlier this week, Post Office Car Insurance stated that motorists who make sure their air conditioning systems are kept in good condition are more likely to enjoy the summer months in their vehicle.
The group also recommended that car servicing checks be carried out to make sure the radiator has enough water to avoid overheating and the engine has sufficient oil levels before heading off on long summer journeys.
