Reduce the Stress: Avoid the Top 10 Breakdowns

Life is stressful enough without having to endure a roadside breakdown. If you’ve ever been stuck at the side or a motorway waiting on a recovery vehicle you’ll know what I mean, particularly if you have the kids with you and you’re off on your summer holidays.
The RAC keeps track of all of their breakdown information. According to their research, the top ten breakdowns on our roads are as follows:

• Battery problems
• Tyre issues
• Engine failures/damage
• Lockouts
• Alternator issues
• Fuel system problems
• Starter motor failures
• Cylinder head gasket issues
• Clutch damage/failures
• Engine control unit (ECU) issues

You definitely do not want to be one of the RAC’s statistics this summer.

To avoid unnecessary breakdowns, it is critical that you have your vehicle serviced regularly. The RAC says that the majority of the breakdowns that they attend could have been avoided if the vehicle was properly maintained.

Although every risk cannot be neutralised, there is a lot you can do to minimise the chances of a breakdown occurring. Doing some simple maintenance checks will not only help protect your car, but will ultimately protect you and your family.

Simple maintenance checks

• Check that your lights are working properly and that the plastic is not cracked or damaged.
• Check oil and coolant regularly.
• Inspect the jack and make sure you know how to operate it. If something does go wrong and you need it, you will be stressed enough as it is without having to learn how to use it – especially if it is raining (and of course, it will be).
• Check the pressure of your tyres and the tread depth. Legally, the tread depth needs to be 1.6 mm along the entire surface of the tyre. Uneven wear could indicate that there is a problem with your suspension.

Bottom line:

Simple preventive maintenance can help you save money in the long run by avoiding a costly repair. If you do not have time to do these checks yourself, make sure you come into an IN’n’OUT centre and get your car checked, before it is too late. This is one stressful thing that we can help you with and you can get on with enjoying the summer.
