Be Prepared: Long Car Journey Tips

Whether it is the road trip of a lifetime or a holiday trip that you take every year, it’s important to be prepared for the journey. There are a few things that you should take with you on any long journey to make sure you stay safe even if the unexpected happens.
One of the most important things to bring with you is an extra bag of warm clothes or a few large blankets. It is important that you have something that you can keep you and your family warm in case you are stranded, even if it is the middle of summer. Also it’s wise to carry an umbrella or two and sufficient jackets for each person travelling.

If you are travelling with children prepare yourself with an arsenal of games, stories, and music. The last thing you want to hear is, “Are we there yet?” every five minutes. Make sure your little ones and not so little ones have something to occupy themselves during the journey. It is also sensible to carry a first aid kit in the car. Actually, a first aid kit is not just for long journeys and should be an essential in-car accessory available at all times. A simple kit with some basics including plasters, bandages and antiseptic wipes are generally sufficient for most journeys. However, for a longer trip, consider investing in a survival kit, or create your own, that includes a torch, survival bags or foil ‘wrap-arounds’ (as seen worn by runners to keep warm at the end of the London Marathon) can be life savers when the temperature drops; a tyre repair kit or an aerosol sealer. Portable air compressors (to save your energy re-inflating tyres) are now affordable luxuries and are usually powered using the car’s cigarette lighter.

Don’t forget some bottled water and a few snacks in case you need them for an emergency. You’ll never appreciate a few hidden treats more than when you and your loved ones are on the hard shoulder with an hour’s wait before the roadside rescue arrives.

If you have a portable sat nav, don’t forget to pack it. Or if not, make sure you have an up-to-date map of your route and you’ve planned it well. There’s nothing more stressful than driving when unsure of where you are going. Lastly, so make sure you have your mobile phone and an in-car phone charger.

So we’ve covered here a few of the essentials that you should consider for the longer car journey, but what about your car itself? Is it up to the journey? It’s important that your car is checked prior to setting off.
