Apparently, oestrogen allows women to do better at tasks that require mental flexibility, tasks that involve the frontal lobes of the brain. The frontal lobes are the area of the brain that is stimulated by tasks where attention and rule learning are required. Because of their higher oestrogen levels, women are able to shift their attention to different stimulus easier and perform takes such as driving and reading better.
Other research suggests that the oestrogen levels are not the only factor that influences the battle of the sexes when it comes to driving. The general psychology of driving a car also comes into play. On average, men are more likely to take risks than women; women are more cautious. When the types of accidents between the sexes were analysed, researchers found that women tend to have accidents at roundabouts and T-junctions. Their accidents tend to be at slower speeds than men who tend to be involved in more serious crashes, at higher speeds.
Even insurance companies are recognising the fact that women are safer drivers. In the late 1990s, some insurance companies started to offer women-only insurance. These UK companies backed up their claims based on research that was performed by the AA. This research found that men drive faster and break the law more often when they are behind the wheel.
Women are not only more cautious behind the wheel, but their caution is also reflected when taking their car in for a service. This is hardly surprising when according to Motor Codes (the automotive industry's self-regulatory body), over a third of car owners have been dissatisfied with the service they have received in the last five years.
At IN’n’OUT we’ve gone out of our way to ensure that the experience you receive is a far cry from so many garages.
