10 tips to make you a better, safer driver

1. Think with your brain NOT with your brakes.

Keep a safe distance from vehicles in front and if you see an incident – or if there is something in the road – then DON’T just hit the brakes: this can cause you to lose control, or can cause other cars to run into you. Apply the brakes smoothly and keep an eye in your rear-view mirror. Have your brakes, and the rest of your car checked regularly.

2. Take a Break.

Don’t keep driving till your eyes are drooping. 20% of accidents are caused by tired drivers. If you absolutely have to complete your journey then stop, have 2 cups of coffee and a 15 minute nap before continuing.

3. Follow the lights.

Don’t try and beat the amber light – a driver coming the other way may have seen your light change and pulled away early. Don’t be either of these drivers - stick to the rules.

4. Be careful around parked traffic.

It’s a dangerous scenario; parked cars obscure pedestrians (and pets!). Consider whether you would be able to stop in time if a child ran out from the back of a parked car? If not, then SLOW DOWN. Again, have your brakes and lights checked regularly.

5. Keep your windows clean.

Clean your car windows regularly: can you see clearly out of all of your windows? Have your wiper blades replaced when you have your car serviced.

6. Mirrors.

Ensure that your mirrors are set correctly. If you share a car, then adjust the mirrors to suit your driving position before setting off on your journey. You should be able to see clearly around the whole of your vehicle.

7. Servicing.

Have your car checked regularly, especially if you are going on a long journey. Although there are certain checks that you can do yourself, get a professional to check your brakes and other important parts of your vehicle.

8. Take a mobile phone.

If the worst happens and you have an accident or breakdown, you can then make the relevant calls. Have the phone number of your breakdown company or local garage stored on your phone. Avoid breakdowns by keeping your car well serviced.

9. Keep your distance.

Don’t tailgate other road users – regardless of how slowly they are going. Give them plenty of room and overtake when it is safe. Consider your braking distance when driving on the motorway – the Highway Code states that there should be at least a 2 second gap between you and the car in front: time it!

10. Dashboard lights and gauges.

Keep an eye on the warning lights and gauges on your dashboard. If there are any problems then take your car into your local garage straightaway to have it checked over. Ensuring that your car is regularly serviced, and checking it before long journeys, should prevent you from having problems.
