Protect Your Engine

To keep your car running at its best, you should ideally change your oil and oil filter twice a year. If you are a high mileage driver, more frequent changes may be required.
But, what does engine oil do?

Engine oil is used to lubricate the internal parts of your car’s engine. Engine oil also provides secondary functions. It cleans the engine by carrying away contaminants. It also improves the sealing, and it cools the engine by carrying heat away from moving components inside of the engine. Engine oil also contains additives that are able to neutralise acids.

Why change the oil?

At high temperatures, engine oil will thermally break down and become less effective as a lubricant. If your car’s engine oil is not performing its functions adequately, engine parts wear out quicker, and the overall life of your engine will be affected. In addition, the additives in the oil will eventually be used up and will not be able to neutralise acid, which can be corrosive. Finally, all of the contaminants that the engine carries away from the moving components will start to add up. Eventually, if left unchanged, the oil will reach its saturation limit and will not be able to remove impurities. These impurities can start to cause damage to your engine.

If the oil is not able to perform all of its functions adequately, your engine could be severely damaged because it is being put under unwanted stress. If your oil is left unchanged for long enough, your engine could be so damaged that it will need to be replaced.

Unfortunately, you may not even know there is a problem until your hear knocking noises coming from the engine when you start your car. If your car gets to this point, it is too late.

Whenever your oil is changed, the filter should also be changed. The reason is that you do not want to put new, clean oil into a system that has a dirty filter. Even if the oil is clean, the filter could quickly become clogged if not changed regularly.

Do not take the risk with your engine. Get your oil and oil filter changed twice a year - more frequently if you are a high mileage driver.
